Getting Ready for Your Dentist Appointment

You have done your research and finally found the perfect dentist for your needs. Now, it is time to get ready for your first appointment, and a part of that preparation includes knowing what to expect before and during your first appointment. Hopefully, you have found a practice with helpful hygienists, office administrators and a quality dentist. Northville, MI is home to a variety dental care professionals who are there to serve your oral hygiene needs. The beginning of your oral health includes:

• Having insurance information
• Filling out paperwork
• Getting initial examination completed

So whether you are going for a consultation for serious work or just starting routine cleanings, the preparation and initial appointment are all similar.

Having Insurance Information
Besides your name and date of birth, one of the first questions you will be asked is whether or not you have insurance. It is important, therefore, to have your insurance card and coverage information on you. The office can check your benefits and make a visit as cost effective to you as possible. Knowing what your insurance will cover will help you budget and prepare with a payment plan. If you do not have insurance, most offices will set up a payment and go over costs with you beforehand. They will also ask for the primary holder’s date of birth and social security number. Therefore, if you are not the primary, have this information ready.

Filling Out Paperwork
The next step to your first appointment day is filling out your personal information. Some dentists’ offices will email or mail the paperwork for you to be filled out before arrival; others will have you fill it out when you get there. Paperwork can take anywhere from five to fifteen minutes to fill out, depending on how extensive it is. The office might ask for your license to verify identity, address, and date of birth. Other information that will probably be asked for: reason for visit, medical history, a list of complaints, drug allergies, and eating/drinking habits.

Getting Initial Examination Completed
After all the preparation, your name is called and a dental hygienist begins your examination. X-rays may be taken, your teeth might be cleaned and flossed, checked for cavities and cracks, and gums assessed. The dentist will then make an appearance to review what was found and to educate you on how to further your dental health. The anticipation of the first visit is now complete.
