If you’re of a certain age, you know that the spring and summer wedding market is geared to twenty-somethings, and that finding something suitable for a thirty or forty-something wedding that’s not all white and pastels is an Indiana Jones level endeavor. Let’s look at some color palettes for the more sophisticated bride.
- Rose Gold Wedding: This opulent color is a wonderful choice – softer than the intensity of copper and not as brassy as some shades of gold – and almost demands candlelight and Art Nouveau surroundings. Incorporated into an ivory bridal dress, the look is at once sophisticated and grounded. Men can incorporate the color into their suits with a vest under a darker coat, or even as a bow tie. Rose gold wedding decor can also be a warm underpinning for a palette at the reception.
- Red Wedding: Not for the faint of heart, this color has been worn for weddings for thousands of years by brides in India and Asia, as well as the Middle East. Royal brides wore the color before Victoria made white de rigeur. Red and gold can make your wedding into an opulent affair. Men can wear a vest, or go for the full red wedding suit – but should take care not to look like one of the valet parking attendants.
- True Navy Blue: One of the classic colors and flattering on just about everyone, navy blue can replace the greys and blacks in the groom’s party, and add sophisticated, dignified touches to the bride’s dress and those of her bridesmaids.
- Mid-Tone Mismatch: Not everything has to be matchy-matchy. Somewhere between pastels and jewel tones there are the midtones and they are anything but wishy-washy. The best way to understand mid tones is to think of them in terms of paint – and picking complementary colors for the members of your parties. Don’t stop with the bridal party, but encourage the groomsmen to lighten up as well.
- Ivory Sophistication: It’s not white, but a more sophisticated choice. It’s a little like comparing candlelight to the light from an LED. Where white would be jarring, ivory can be a lovely, warmer choice for the bride and as touches of warmer color on the bride’s and groom’s parties.
As you can see, you have more choices than frothy white and Easter-egg pastels. You can go as bold or as understated as you please. After all, why are you going to be a princess on your wedding day, when you’re already a queen?
