On a very basic level; it could be said that there are two types of people who might pay a visit to a Chiropractor in St. Augustine, Florida:-
1. The last resort case who has been in pain for a long time and is turning to a Chiropractor in St. Augustine on the basis of – “I’ve tried everything else without any relief so I might as well give this a try”.
2. The more informed person who has read about chiropractic practices in library books, magazines and, maybe, researched it on the internet and has concluded that there might be something to the more all embracing attitude to bodily wellbeing that is associated with many chiropractors.
So; What Does A Chiropractor Do?
There is a lot of controversy over this question although much of it is fuelled by the more officially recognized, scientific medical community; a major contributing factor being that; while chiropractic can be shown to help people; it is not easy to provide hard scientific evidence that shows how it really works. However, the basic ideas behind it are formulated from ancient principles that the component parts of our bodies are in some way interconnected in such a way that something out of alignment in one part can cause problems in a different remote part. Think in terms of things like Chinese acupuncture or many of the eastern therapeutic massage techniques whereby pressure applied to (say) a pressure point in your foot can relieve the pain from a headache. Chiropractors manipulate joints within the body (in particular the spine) so as to relieve problems throughout the body in general.
Hence, the name chiropractic which has its origins in ancient Greek words for manipulating something with the hands. The practice re-entered western thinking in Iowa during the late 1890’s through the work of a magnetic healer called Daniel David Palmer. Undoubtedly, he did use manipulation to “cure” some people’s “problems”; but he intertwined his research and findings with religious and mystical overtones regarding the “life force” from God that permeates our bodies. Palmer initially kept the details of his techniques secret; but did, eventually begin to teach some selected students; including his own son (Bartlett Joshua) who took over the school and enlarged enrollment. The Palmers are effectively the “fathers” of today’s Chiropractor in St. Augustine.
