What You Should Do If You Accidentally Lose Your Car Keys or Fob

We’ve all been there at least once in our lives: you check your pockets or your purse for your car keys only to have the rising feeling of panic consume you when they aren’t where they are supposed to be. Losing your car keys or fob can be a stressful experience, but here’s what to do when it happens.

Call for Help

If you’ve simply left your keys inside of your car and you have a telematic system, such as OnStar or BlueLink, then you can simply call your car’s service and ask them to unlock your vehicle for you.

Even if your keys aren’t inside of your locked car, your telematic system can still unlock it so that you can wait inside for a tow truck or a family member to swing by with that extra set of keys.

Replace Lost Keys

Depending on the type of key or fob your car uses, you may have to either visit a locksmith or make a trip to your dealership or a repair shop. Locksmiths will be able to replace any traditional car keys from older vehicles if there aren’t any electronics involved.

However, keys with remote transponders or key-less entry fobs, which must connect with your car in order to work, require that you visit your dealership, as your car must be paired with the new key. This process, known as key programming, is quick and easy for most professionals to complete.

For key programming, one of the best software programs to use is AVDI (ABRITES Vehicle Diagnostic Interface), which you can learn more about by visiting Abrites USA .
